Notre-Dame of ParisOne of the world's great architectural masterpieces, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame dominates the skyline of central Paris.

"Notre-Dame" translates literally to "Our Lady." This magnificent early-Gothic Cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Begun in 1163 and completed in 1345, it was the literary character Quasimodo who saved the Cathedral. Scheduled to be demolished around 1831, the publication of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, by Victor Hugo, revived national interest in the building, and it was saved.

A vast storehouse of artistic treasures, its Rose Windows are among the most stunning. Designed by Jean de Chelles in 1260, the Southern Rose Window (42 feet wide) was completely rebuilt for the second time in the 19th century. It stands today as an exquisite achievement in the history of glass art.

PillowFamed for its radiant pink and crimson tones developed in the Paris glass workshops, Christ of the Apocalypse is the central image. Surrounding Christ are the 12 Apostles. Surrounding the Apostles are the 24 Martyrs. The Martyr Virgins, shown with crowns of martyrdom, are encircled by Angels around the window's outer edge.

The Southern Rose is a great celebration of, and tribute to, faith.
